About This Quote

In the 16th century, a Spanish conquistador named Hernando de Soto was sent from Cuba to Florida to capture the Indian people of that region. In time, he came up against a fierce leader named Hatuey who was determined to resist all efforts to be absorbed into the Spanish empire. De Soto was able to capture Hatuey and bring him before a shamed King Ferdinand, who ordered the Indian leader’s execution. The king chose Hatuey’s life over his own by asking which he wanted: freedom and a life in freedom in the New World or a life of slavery in Spain. Hatuey chose freedom and a death in freedom.

After the Spaniards had tied the Indian to the stakes, they extended him the choice of converting to Christianity and ascending to Heaven or going unrepentantly to Hell. He chose the latter. Then, gathering that his executioners expected to go straight to Heaven, Hatuey chose Heaven over Hell.
